GRANDMA'S HANDS

I was privileged to take a photo of "Five Generations of Women" shortly before my 93 year-old Grandmother passed away last year.

The photo shown below, features the hands of my Grandmother, Mom, Sister, Niece and Great-Niece. While I can't take credit for the idea, I was so happy to have had the suggestion & capture this moment. It inspired a friend of mine to do something similar, which turned out so beautiful it became a special keepsake, prior to her father's passing.

GRANDMA'S HANDS

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.

When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking," she said in a clear voice strong.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK." I explained to her.

"Have you ever looked at your hands," she asked. "I mean really looked at your hands?"

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

"Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life."

"They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor."

"They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war."

"They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special."

"They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse."

"They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand."

"They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer."

"These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life."

"But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ."

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home.

When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God.

I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

New School Immunization Requirements Effective Aug. 1

Changes to school immunization requirements for five vaccines take effect Aug. 1 according to Texas Department of State Health Services officials.

“The changes were made to update the Texas elementary and secondary school immunization requirements to more closely match recommendations by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices,” said Jack Sims, DSHS immunization branch manager.

Changes affect mainly students entering kindergarten and seventh grade. All immunizations must be completed by the first day of attendance at public and private schools. The vaccines and new requirements are:

Hepatitis A vaccine: Students entering kindergarten statewide must have had two doses of the hepatitis A vaccine.
Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine: Students entering kindergarten must have had two doses of the MMR vaccine. Students in grades 1 through 12 must continue to meet the current requirement, which is two doses of a measles-containing vaccine and one dose each of mumps and rubella vaccine.
Varicella vaccine: Students entering kindergarten and seventh grade must have had two doses. Students in grades 1 though 6 and 8 through 12 must continue to meet the current requirement, which is one dose of varicella vaccine.
Tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis-containing vaccine (Tdap): Students entering seventh grade must have had one dose of Tdap vaccine. Students in seventh grade must have had a booster dose of Tdap, but only if it has been five years since their last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine. Students in grades 8 through 12 must have had a booster dose of Tdap if it has been 10 years since their last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine.
Meningococcal vaccine: Students entering seventh grade must have had one dose.
“A student may be enrolled provisionally if the student has received at least one dose of each required vaccine,” Sims said. “To remain enrolled, the student must complete the required doses in each vaccine series on schedule and as quickly as is medically feasible.”

Information about the new Texas immunization requirements was sent to health care providers, schools and child-care facilities earlier this year.

The full list of immunization requirements effective Aug. 1 for the 2009-2010 school year is available at www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/docs/school/6-14eng.pdf.

Immunizations also are required for children in pre-kindergarten and child-care facilities. Those requirements are available at www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/docs/school/childcare_reqsENG.pdf.

AARP.ORG ELECTRICITY RESOURCES TO COMBAT THE TEXAS HEAT! As we continue to face record-breaking temperatures across the state, AARP wants to be sure that you know what resources are available to help with skyrocketing electricity bills. Payment Plans If you are getting behind in your electricity payments you should ask your electric company to help you. You can suggest a payment plan that works for you. Make sure you will be able to afford the new payment plan because if you miss a payment the total amount will become due and it will be harder to prevent a shut-off. Budget Billing
You can spread the really high cooling costs of summer across the entire calendar year by signing up for budget billing. With budget billing (also called levelized or average payments) instead of paying more when you use more, you pay roughly the same amount every month. Budget billing is not a discount program; it offers no savings or lower rates but will make bill paying more manageable.

State Electric Discount
If you live in a deregulated area of the state and have a household income of less than $13,538 for one person and $18,213 for a couple, you may be eligible to receive a 20% discount on your electricity bill. The LITE-UP Texas program provides this discount on electric bills from May-September. If you receive other income-eligible state benefits you may already be automatically enrolled in the program. To find out if you are eligible, call 1-866-454-8387.

Energy Assistance Grants
If your annual income is less than $13,538 for one person and $18,213 for a couple, you may be able to get up to $1,200 to help you pay for immediate utility expenses. Energy Assistance Grants are federally funded, but locally administered. To locate your local entity administering this program to apply for assistance, call 1-877-399-8939.

Weatherization Assistance
You can lower your electricity bills through energy efficiency measures, such as insulation and weather-stripping through the federally funded, but locally administered Weatherization Assistance Program. This program is open to income eligible households with an annual income of less than $13,538 for one person and $18,213 for a couple. To locate your local entity administering this program to apply, call 1-888-606-8889.

Switching Electricity Providers
If you live in a deregulated area of the state and you are considering switching electricity providers you can get information on what's available at:

1-866-PWR 4 TEX (1-866-797-4839)
or www.powertochoose. org

Here are some things to remember when shopping for a new Retail Electric Provider:

Take nothing for granted. Double-check the terms of the service agreement before saying yes.
Check the rate, the minimum time the rate must be in effect, penalties, and extra fees charged by the Retail Electric Provider.
You have three days to rescind the agreement. Use this right if you think you may have made a mistake.
If You Have Problems Or Questions About Your Electric Service:

Step 1. Call the electric company or in deregulated areas your Retail Electric Provider.
Step 2. Contact the Public Utility Commission (PUC) at 1-888-782-8477 and ask to file a complaint.
Step 3. Send a copy of the complaint to your State Representative and State Senator. You can find out which elected officials represent you (and get their contact information) at: http://www.fyi. legis.state. tx.us/

This email was sent to you by AARP.

Parental rights in jeopardy: Call Governor Perry today!
June 17, 2009

In a slick, last-minute move, dangerous language was tacked on as an amendment SB 1440, a bill which was just a simple two-line bill about a judge's signature in child abuse cases. This language, added on the last days of the legislative session, adds over 3 additional pages to this bill and strips parents of fundamental constitutional parental rights. That is why we are asking you to call Gov. Perry and ask him to VETO SB 1440!

SB 1440 allows Department of Family & Protective Services (DFPS) to enter your home and take your child from you where ever your child can be found, without prior notice, without a prior hearing, without a search warrant for an "interview, examination, and investigation. " The law previously required a showing of "good cause." This requirement has now been eliminated under SB 1440.

This series of attacks on your family can take place "based on information available"-which could be an anonymous caller who believes "abuse" or "neglect" "may be" taking place in the home. This unconstitutional law can also be used to access your child's medical records, without your consent, against your objections, and without prior notice.
Read the letter to Governor Perry from Texas Homeschool Coalition. This letter clearly outlines the danger in this bill.

TAKE ACTION!
Call Governor Rick Perry today and ask him to VETO SB 1440. His office number is 512.463.2000

Sincerely,

Donald E. Wildmon,
Founder and Chairman
American Family Association

**Note: Please click on the hyperlink for SB 1440 to read the bill. In the bill there is language you may not understand, the following definitions are for the purposes of clarity. These definitions can be found on Wikipedia.

de novo - In law, the expression trial de novo means a "new trial" by a different tribunal . A trial de novo is usually ordered by an appellate court when the original trial failed to make a determination in a manner dictated by law.

ex parte - is a Latin legal term meaning "from (by or for) one party" . An ex parte decision is one decided by a judge without requiring all of the parties to the controversy to be present.

"The rewards are great if one succeeds but the rewards are great only because so few succeed. Many succumb to despair and fail without realizing that they already possess all the tools needed to acquire great wealth. Many others face each obstacle in their path with fear and doubt and consider them as enemies when, in truth, these obstacles are friends and helpers. Obstacles are necessary for success as in all careers of importance, victory comes only after many struggles and countless defeats. Yet each struggle, each defeat, sharpens your skills and strengths, your courage and your endurance, your ability and your confidence and thus each obstacle is a comrade-in-arms forcing you to become better ... or quit. Each rebuff is an opportunity to move forward; turn away from them, avoid them, and you throw away your future"....

RIKKI GILLUM IS FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF GRANDPARENTS!
Interview by: Isiah Carey of Fox 26 News

DO YOU THINK GRANDPARENTS SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO FILE LAWSUITS TO GET THEIR GRANDCHILDREN?

Rikki Gillum says she is the new face of the changing American family. She's raising her two grandchildren.

"I'm a 40-something-year-old grandmother, so I'm relatively young as a grandparent, and I certainly didn't see this phase of my life being as it is."

Gillum's two daughters became pregnant in college. She stepped in and cared for the children while her daughters continued their education. But now Gillum is concerned about other Texas grandparents out there. She says they could soon be shut out.

Here's the issue: currently, the state statute makes it easy for grandparents to gain permanent custody of their grandkids. But Texas House Bill 2084 currently being debated would strike that rule, leaving grandparents with little or no rights. Gillum thinks the statute shouldn’t change.

But state representative Phil King says grandparents have become too powerful and some are abusive with the law. That's why he's wants to end their right to sue for custody or visitation with House Bill 2084.

Sarah James is a new parent. She feels allowing grandparents to take a child isn’t fair without solid evidence of an unfit parent.

"They should have to prove that there is neglect going on in the home."

House Bill 2084 is out of the committee and waiting on action by the legislature. In addition to King the bill is being supported by home school parents in Texas.
